Subtle Illiteracies


Consider this CBC News story's title:

"Riding for a cause: Hundreds biking to Montreal to raise money for HIV/AIDS"

'Biking' ought to be 'Bicycling'. 'Biking', in the English that I'm familiar with, means 'motorbiking/motorcycling', and a 'biker' is a motorcyclist, not a bicyclist.

I know, I know -- I'm being a nit-picker here, but I'm justified. When I first read the article's title, what else could I possibly picture in my mind but these sorts:
